About Sadoway Labs Foundation

Sadoway Labs Foundation (SLF) is an applied research organization and 501(c)(3) nonprofit advancing extreme electrochemical technologies for industrial energy and materials processing.

Our team of researchers and engineers push the boundaries of extreme electrochemistry applications: electrochemical systems that operate far beyond the limits of aqueous chemistry to unlock new pathways for electrified, high‑throughput industry processes.

We develop electrochemical platforms that enable industrial electrification and decarbonization solutions to lower commercial operating costs (CapEx and OpEx) and provide electrified alternatives to carbon-dependence across metals, chemicals, and materials production.

Founded by Professor Donald Sadoway, SLF was created to advance technically ambitious research unconstrained by traditional academic or commercial structures. Our novel technologies include the Whole Earth Battery, CO2 Zapper, metals recycling, and rare earths metal production.

His inventions have significantly impacted the storage of renewable energy, providing solutions crucial for large-scale grid applications. Sadoway's innovative approach has earned him prestigious accolades, including the European Inventor Award in 2022.

SLF Team and Research Capabilities

Sadoway Labs Foundation brings together a team of researchers and engineers with decades of experience in extreme electrochemistry, high‑temperature materials systems, and industrial process innovation.

Our expertise spans metallurgy, molten salt electrochemistry, electrochemical reactor design and holistic industrial plant design, and technoeconomic analysis that guides strategic decision‑making for industrial deployment.

SLF researches and engineers have deep expertise in advancing high‑temperature electrochemical pathways that outperform the limits of aqueous systems, enabling reactions, separations, and process intensification steps that conventional electrochemistry cannot achieve.

This deep technical foundation allows us to help industry partners evaluate feasibility, reduce technical risk, and accelerate development of electrified production processes.

We combine fundamental electrochemical insight, reactor- and plant-scale engineering, and rigorous technoeconomic modeling to ensure that every technology pathway we pursue has a clear line of sight to industrial relevance.

Whether the goal is industrial decarbonization and electrification, simplifying process flows, improving energy efficiency, or enabling new materials production routes, SLF is excited to tackle your toughest challenges.
